I never thought I’d do this, but I’m going to say this :
I think that trying to run a blog in order to make other people feel bad about themselves JUST because they’re not a darker race is really, really “racist,” don’t you think? Oh, look at the irony in that! There have been all of these movements in order to help ease and gradually destroy the racism that wreaks in societies around the world through either radicalism and violence or encouraging peace and understanding. Then here comes a blog where someone is basically promoting the things that people TRY to get rid of.
Yes, I know about classicism. YES, I know about structural marginilazation and every single thing that could possibly prevent me from truly feeling accepted in a white emphasized society. I’m aware of all of it, but I don’t go around telling anyone that’s lighter than I am that they should be aware that they’re more privileged than I am and they should feel ashamed of that and always live with a sense of entitlement to people of darker ethnicities.
People don’t realize that being a racist isn’t just limited to a white person being prejudiced or discriminatory towards someone of a different ethnic background. Racism ties into anything that makes someone look down on another person because of the color of their skin and that’s essentially what your blog is trying to do and it bugs the hell out of me. You’re running a blog that informs white people that they have all of these built in, age old systematic privileges, but you structure it where they should hate themselves because of it?
A slave owner’s great, great, great, great grand daughter doesn’t make that daughter a slave owner. Think about that. It’s just as bad as all of the underground wars that break open across America based on the fact that some blacks/latinos despise white people for what their ancestors did to their people, and (ethnically speaking), still do. And think about it…telling a white person about all of the privileges they have…do you think that’s REALLY going to want to make them want to get rid of it?
Sure, it might make them become more sympathetic towards said ‘minorities’ and it’ll educate them about class structure. That’s cool and all but it doesn’t really help anything. This generation is so focused on being individualistic, that they rarely care about the bigger picture. It’s about living in the biggest, most fascist, materialistic and ‘carefree’ bubble as you can until you turn 25. Then you start taking things more seriously.
I don’t think that trying to run a blog that indirectly tells whites that they should feel terrible about themselves because they’re white and they should automatically bear such a terrible racist burden on them is the right thing to do. It makes you look racist yourself for doing such a thing. The roles are just reversed.
My blog isn’t about making white people feel bad that they are not people of color. That reading completely boggles my mind, because there’s nothing on my blog even remotely nearing that sentiment. My blog is about telling racists to STFU.
I have never said white people should hate themselves. I have never said anybody should hate themselves for their skin color.
Yes, exposing unaware people to the fact that they have undue privilege should inspire them to read up more about it and do their part to use that privilege for good. It’s not going to disappear overnight. I don’t expect white privilege or racism to end in my lifetime. I can only call out other white people who are guilty of perpetuating the problem.
It’s not about being sympathetic to people of color, though your phrasing makes it sound more like “pity.” I think being sympathetic, in general, is a good quality to have as it pertains to many things. But it is about understanding how race and racism work in this society, about being aware of it and doing what one can to oppose that.
It’s not about feeling guilty for what your ancestors did, it’s taking responsibility for what you can do now to play your small part.
Calling out the racism of racists is not “reverse racism” or “racism against whites.” It’s opposing racists, opposing racism, not opposing white people.
Plus reverse racism doesn’t exist because white privilege puts white people in a position where they can never be oppressed by racism (whereas white privilege puts non-whites in a position where they can always be oppressed by racism). That doesn’t mean that some non-whites can’t be bigoted, but as for reverse racism, it doesn’t exist. It can’t exist.
